Iruya es un pueblo de la provincia de Salta y tiene la particularidad que para poder llegar se debe transitar por la provincia de Jujuy.
Está ubicado a 2780 msnm, , rodeado por los ríos Colanzulí y Milmahuasi. Sobre los faldeos orientales de la sierra de Santa Victoria, a 307 km de la capital salteña.
Llegamos y comprobamos que tal como nos habían dicho da la Impresión de ser un pueblito «colgado en la montaña», luego de pasar por Abra del Cóndor a 4000 msnm., donde la explosión de colores es increíble, los colores van del verde agreste al morado o violeta, pasando por el amarillo y el azul metálico...
La palabra "Iruya" proviene del quechua y significa abundante paja. o ‘Lugar de los pastos altos’.
Este pueblo antiguamente fue transitado entre el Alto Perú y las nuevas poblaciones que comenzaban a levantarse en la región.
Cada año, el 1° de Agosto se celebra la “Fiesta de la Pachamama”, y el primer fin de semana de Octubre se realiza una particular celebración en honor a la Virgen del Rosario y de San Roque, donde se confunden de manera singular lo pagano y lo religioso y pudimos compartir esa experiencia.
La iglesia de la Virgen de Nuestra Señora del Rosario se ubica en el año 1753 fecha de la fundación del pueblo aunque las actas de nacimiento encontradas en la parroquia de Humahuaca indican que la presencia de habitantes se remonta un siglo antes de su fundación.
En los alrededores del pueblo existen indicios de que hubo alguna etnia antes de la llegada de los realistas. Un ejemplo son las ruinas de Titiconte, ubicadas a unos 8 km al este de Iruya.
los iruyanos tienen una economía de subsistencia, se dedican a la cría de ovejas, cabras y llamas, además de cultivar maíz, papas andinas quínoa ,actividades agrícolas que se trasmiten de generación en generación a lo largo de más de 200 años también se sigue practicando el trueque. Y se lo realiza en la playa del rio (la feria), donde cada uno expone sus productos y los cambia por otros que le sirvan.
El pueblo tiene un estilo colonial con callejuelas estrechas y paisajes imponentes aprovechamos a caminar por sus calles angostas y empedradas, observando la construcción de las casas que para nuestra sorpresa la mayoría son construidas de adobe, piedras y paja y aún siguen en pie.
Todo es una fiesta en Iruya, la presencia de los Cachis con sus vestimentas, máscaras coloridas acompañaban esta tradicional ceremonia como promesantes de la Virgen del Rosario.
Cuentan los viejos del pueblo, que los Cachis y su representación de danza y pantomima forman parte de un ritual precolombino que los nativos ofrecían a la Pachamama como tributo y ofrenda por la gracia recibida.
El grupo, compuesto por personas que en su mayoría son promesantes iruyanos, simbolizan una familia con sus bienes y hacienda que solicitan la protección de la Virgen contra las tentaciones de un negro que oficia de bufón.
Tanto al mediodía y a la noche se realiza la procesión, los Cachis van adelante custodiándola a la Virgen, son seis personajes con máscaras, promesantes que adoran a la Virgen, a los que se les suman dos Caballeros (en la cintura llevan fajas que hacia adelante terminan en una cabeza de caballo), un Torito (que se lo lleva en la cabeza con una máscara) y el Negro (deforme y jorobado, de rasgos africanos).
Este grupo simboliza la eterna lucha del bien y el mal.
Antiguo territorio de los ocloyas, la zona de Iruya fue evangelizada primero y en forma breve por los jesuitas, luego por los franciscanos.
La evangelización se realizó en un momento en que la devoción mariana era fuertemente difundida por la Iglesia; por otra parte, la devoción por la Virgen es uno de los rasgos más comunes en el catolicismo popular en toda la Argentina.
Pero en estas regiones aisladas, donde la influencia europea es limitada y fuerte el elemento nativo, no es raro que esta devoción se halle insertada y combinada con el antiguo culto a la Pachamama, la Madre Tierra, divinidad benéfica que protege y da la vida que concede los dones de la fertilidad y es invocada y honrada hasta nuestros días.
Todo un sincretismo religioso preside la fiesta de Iruya: los caballeros y el toro revelan influencia española, pero el sentido general de la ceremonia es probablemente el de un ritual de fecundidad de origen prehistórico.
La fecha en que se realiza corresponde al periodo en que comienzan las siembras y las labores agrícolas, al despertar de la primavera en las tierras altas.
Estas ceremonias tenían un sentido de recreación del cosmos, de una vuelta al instante original, al punto donde surgió y surge la vida.
Es una experiencia única poder disfrutar de esta fiesta Patronal en este Pueblito tan particular llamado Iruya.
